Jim, the marks are not even on both sides. You need to get the wheel straight first (either jack it and adjust until a new/evenly-worn belt is running in the center, or take off the front pulley cover and use a long straight-edge laid against the back pulley to align them- note that the edge won't be flush with the front pulley, you just need to make sure it is parrallel) then make a note of the differences between the sides. Then use that as a future reference.
